Spring is here! So is the hot, humid weather. And so is DRVisitor's curated list of April events around the Dominican Republic.
This April edition is brief, but valuable with the annual Book Fair in Santo Domingo, for one.
Remember that sometimes (or often actually), events are announced in the DR at the last minute. If that's the case, I'll come back and add an edit note at the end of the post. So bookmark away and check often.
1. 21st International Book Fair (Feria del Libro) – Plaza de la Cultura in Santo Domingo, Thursday April 19-30 at 9pm
This fabulous book fair takes place every year. I went a couple of years ago and it was fun browsing books for sale at special prices from various publishers, attending live performances, snacking, touring educational displays, and just having fun in the massive outdoor space of Plaza de la Cultura. There's always a guest country selected for each book fair, and this year it's Guatemala. I'll be making an effort to stop by, so if you see me there, say hi!
All details of location are on the Facebook page, and I'm sure a day-by-day calendar will be posted as the date nears. Entrance is free.
2. Vicente Garcia Live in Concert — Renaissance Jaragua Hotel in Santo Domingo, Saturday April 21 at 9pm
The triple Latin Grammy-winning, recording artist Vicente Garcia is the best thing that's happening to the Latin music scene. If you've never heard him, well, brace yourself. His music combines a fusion of Dominicna music, as well as modern beats, in intoxicating ballads with deep lyrics. Wow, did I write that? He's just amazing and he's ending his "A La Mar" Tour — after the US, Europe, and Latin America —in his homeland, inSanto Domingo. A much anticipated concert.
Here's one of my favorite Vicente Garcia tunes, "Dulcite e Coco.
Tickets range between RD$1,800 and RD$2,800 (that's Dominican pesos). Purchase them online through Ticket Express, or in person at the Ticket express office in Naco (these are legitimate sources).
P.S. In December 2018, the prince of bachata and internationally-renowned and loved Romeo Santos will perform live in concert at Santo Domingo's Olympic Stadium (Finally! Not Punta Cana, which left many of his fans upset the last time). Tickets are already in sale online as well.
3. "Sol y Agua" Exhibit by Antonio Guadalupe — Quinta Dominica Art Gallery in the Colonial Zone, from March 22 to April 12
Internationally-renowned, award-winning Dominican painter Antonio Guadalupe has a gorgeous umbrella exhibit at Quinta Dominica art gallery. That's right, colorful umbrellas with his hand painted designs bearing various motifs, from Taino heritage to fish, and birds. There are a limited number of replicas on sale at just under $25. Go for the exhibit, stay for the courtyard (one of my favorites in the Zona). Entrance is free.
Quinta Dominica, Calle Padre Billni, 809 687 5944, 9am-6pm daily except Sun.
