Meet the writer and founder of Lebawit Lily Girma.

Originally from Ethiopia, Lily is a multilingual, award-winning writer, author, and travel photographer.

A serial expat and culture-holic, as she calls herself, travel has always been part of her life, and shaped her education, world view, and appreciation for culture and tradition. Before becoming a travel writer, she practiced as a corporate attorney in the US, until she eventually ditched the office for the Caribbean. It's been eight years and she hasn't looked back.

Lily is the author of several Caribbean guidebooks for Moon Travel Guides, including Moon Belize, Belize Cayes, and a recent edition of Moon Dominican Republic. She also co-authored the upcoming 2018 edition of Rough Guide to Jamaica (Rough Guides UK).
Her articles and photography on the Caribbean region–from Jamaica, to Belize, Martinique, Guadeloupe Islands, the Dominican Republic, and more–have also been published in travel print and online outlets such as CNN Travel, AFAR, The Guardian, Delta Sky, MorningCalm Magazine, BBC Travel, New York Magazine, MorningCalm Magazine (Korean Air), American Way, Every Day With Rachael Ray, and Lonely Planet, among others.

She is the local expert and digital country guide author for AFAR Magazine ( on six Caribbean destinations, including Jamaica, St. Lucia, Curaçao, and Guadeloupe Islands.

Lily also provides content strategy, copywriting and editorial direction for destination tourist boards and tourism associations. Her most recent client is the Dominican Republic Ministry of Tourism, who hired her exclusively in 2017-2018 to produce brand new text as well as rewrite all of the content for their official, number one tourism website in English: (new website to be released in 2018). In 2016, Lily was honored with the Marcia Vickery Wallace Memorial Award for Excellence in Travel Journalism from the Caribbean Tourism Organization and from the Jamaica Tourist Board, for her coverage of the Caribbean region over the years.

Fluent in four languages–including French and Spanish–she has lived abroad almost from birth and visited numerous countries, including Cote d’Ivoire, Ethiopia, much of Western Europe, North America, Central America and New Zealand. Lily holds a Bachelor of Arts summa cum laude from the University of Maryland at College Park, and a Juris Doctor from the University of Virginia School of Law.
