Originally from Ethiopia, Lebawit “Lily” Girma is a multilingual, award-winning writer, author, and travel photographer.
A serial expat and culture-holic, as she calls herself, travel has always been part of her life, and shaped her education, world view, and appreciation for culture and tradition. Before becoming a travel writer, Lily practiced as a corporate attorney in the US, until she eventually ditched the office for the Caribbean. It's been eight years and she hasn't looked back.
Lily is the author of several Caribbean guidebooks for Moon Travel Guides, including Moon Belize, Belize Cayes, and a new edition of Moon Dominican Republic. Her articles and photography on the Caribbean region–from Jamaica, to Belize, Martinique, Guadeloupe Islands, the Dominican Republic, and more–have also been published in travel print and online outlets such as CNN Travel, AFAR, The Guardian, Delta Sky, MorningCalm Magazine, BBC Travel, New York Magazine, MorningCalm Magazine (Korean Air), American Way, Every Day With Rachael Ray, and Lonely Planet, among others. She is the Jamaica expert and digital country guide author for AFAR, and was a monthly contributor for Viator Travel’s various Caribbean blogs for two years during the life of the project–including on the DR, Jamaica, Martinique, Guadeloupe Islands and Belize.
In 2016, Lily was honored with the Marcia Vickery Wallace Memorial Award for Excellence in Travel Journalism from the Caribbean Tourism Organization and from the Jamaica Tourist Board, for her coverage of the Caribbean region over the years.
Fluent in four languages–including French and Spanish–she has lived abroad almost from birth and visited numerous countries, including Cote d’Ivoire, Ethiopia, much of Western Europe, North America, Central America and New Zealand.
