The hotel choices in the Dominican Republic are as varied as it gets, from luxurious all-inclusive resorts with preferred club perks, to nature lodges, guesthouses and local, by the hour “cabanas” (ahem).
Rates are higher during the busy season from late November through March. You will also need to plan ahead of time for the busiest times of the year, namely Christmastime and Easter. Keep your eye on websites and hotel social media channels for deals.
Although the DR is best known for its wide choices of giant all inclusive resorts facing powdery beaches, please do venture out of them–there are options all over the island to fit every budget and you should opt for these whenever possible. It’s the best way to get a feel for the country and its incredible people, and allow your travel dollar to trickle to the local community.
There’s a rise in luxurious accommodations in the DR, particularly boutique hotels and luxury, condo-style resorts. The first Aman resort opened in Rio San Juan in November 2015, and fancy digs continue to sprout like mushrooms. Whether you pick a boutique five-star or an affordable B&Bs and lodge, my picks will be based on the properties offering good value access to the DR’s great outdoors and culture.
Camping is not common in the DR, except when clearly organized for overnight hikes or on the beach through kitesurfing schools, or as part of a trip to Bahia de las Águilas, for example.
Take your time in researching your chosen accommodations, to make sure you good value and access to good food, service, and location for your buck.
All of my recommended listings are indicated in each chapter of Moon Dominican Republic. In the meantime, I will share a few selective picks around the country (categorized by region, per the icons at the top of this page).
There will also be blog updates for closings, openings, or specials when relevant.
