It's a big country. When planning a trip to the Dominican Republic, you'll need to pick among the six main regions.

THE CAPITAL CITY: SANTO DOMINGO

Colonial City, art, museums, gastronomy, nightlife, live music, sidewalk cafes, and parks. Santo Domingo is full of life.

PUNTA CANA, BAYAHIBE & SOUTHEAST

White sand beaches, all-inclusive resorts, Taino caves, offshore islands. The most touristy area of the country.

THE SAMANA PENINSULA

Towering cliffs, stunning Atlantic coastline and beaches, fishing villages, waterfalls, horseback riding, and an Afro/European beat. Oh and, humpback whales.

PUERTO PLATA AND THE NORTH COAST

Outdoor adventure galore (kitesurfing, surfing, hiking, river dipping), cultural excursions, fishing villages and beaches to no end, coffee and cacao plantations, amber mines, merengue tipico, and stunning sunsets.

SANTIAGO & THE CIBAO

Agricultural heartland of the DR. Verdant landscapes with peaks, farms, waterfalls, scenic drives, riverside and mountain lodges, river tubing, pine forests, strawberries, cool weather. And the mighty Pico Duarte.

BARAHONA, PEDERNALES & SOUTHWEST

Desert and mountains, birds and wildlife, mountains falling into the sea, pebble stone Caribbean beaches, lush parks and reserves, lagoons, riverfed swimming holes, coffee plantations, larimar mines. And Bahia de Las Aguilas.
